Product activation, registration and versions

The following support information is designed to help you understand how you can activate your Nitro PDF Professional license, register for support, and run the application in different modes. This page covers three main topics:

• Activation. This is the process of activating the Nitro PDF Professional license you have purchased on a computer.
• Registration. The optional step you can take of registering your copy of Nitro PDF Professional to gain technical support services.
• Versions. The different ways (or modes) in which you can use Nitro Pro, based on how long it’s been installed and whether you have purchased a license.

Activating your license

Product activation is the process we use for registering your Nitro PDF Professional product license for use on a particular computer. Activation is completely anonymous; no personal information is required nor is any personal information sent to Nitro PDF Software or its partners.

What is activation for?

Product activation helps us ensure you are using a genuine copy of Nitro PDF Professional and that your license is not already in use. And for group- or site-wide installations, it can help IT administrators streamline larger installations of Nitro Pro across many computers – as you can use the one license key across all computers for fast deployment and to easily ensure the maximum number of available licenses are not exceeded.

How to activate your license (automatically)

If you have installed Nitro PDF Professional on a computer that connects to the Internet, you can activate quickly via these steps:

1. Open Nitro PDF Professional
2. On the Help ribbon, in the Product group, click License Information
3. Click Activate
4. Click the Activate Nitro PDF Professional option, and then click Next
5. Click Activate to complete the process.

How to activate your license (automatically via a proxy server)

If you connect to the Internet through a proxy server, then you may need to configure your proxy settings to successfully complete the activation process. Follow these steps to activate via a proxy server:

1. Open Nitro PDF Professional
2. On the Help ribbon, in the Product group, click License Information
3. Click Activate
4. Click the Activate Nitro PDF Professional option, and then click Next
5. On the Activate Nitro PDF Professional dialog, click Proxy settings
6. Enter your proxy settings, and then click Close
7. Click Activate to complete the process.

How to activate your license (manually)

On computer 1

1. Open Nitro PDF Professional
2. On the Help ribbon, in the Product group, click License Information
3. Click Activate
4. Click Activate manually via a web browser
5. Make a copy of the installation ID and license code

On computer 2

1. On an Internet-enabled computer, open a web browser, and then go to our manual activation webpage
2. Enter your installation ID and license code, and then click Generate/Unlock Code/Certificate
3. Copy the newly generated activation certificate so you can transfer it back to the computer on which Nitro Pro is installed

On computer 1

1. Transfer the activation code back to the computer on which Nitro Pro is being activated.
2. On the Activate Manually dialog, paste in the activation code and click Activate to complete the process.

How to deactivate your license (automatically)

If you have installed Nitro PDF Professional on a computer that connects to the Internet, you can deactivate quickly via these steps:

1. Open Nitro PDF Professional
2. On the Help ribbon, in the Product group, click License Information
3. Click Deactivate
4. On the Deactivate Nitro PDF Professional dialog, click Deactivate.

How to deactivate your license (manually)

If Nitro Pro is installed on a computer that cannot connect to the Internet, deactivation is still possible by manual means. It involves connecting to the Internet from another computer and transferring a deactivation code between them.

On computer 1

1. Open Nitro PDF Professional
2. On the Help ribbon, in the Product group, click License Information
3. Click Deactivate
4. Click Deactivate manually via a web browser
5. On the Deactivate Manually dialog, click Deactivate
6. 6. Make a copy of the deactivation certificate code

On computer 2

1. Move to an Internet-enabled computer, open a web browser, and then go to our manual deactivation webpage
2. Enter your deactivation certificate code and then click Deactivate License.

How to transfer your license to another computer

Moving your license between computers simply involves deactivating the license on one computer and then activating it again on the new computer. Use the appropriate step-by-step guides above to use your license on another computer.

Troubleshooting and getting help with activation

If you’re having trouble with activating or deactivating Nitro PDF Professional. Follow these steps to find the quickest solution:

1. Manually activate/deactivate. If the step-by-step instructions above to automatically activate or deactivate your license aren’t working, try the instructions for performing the process manually. (Note: you won’t need to use two computers, the manual process just involved visiting a web site with your details.)
2. Common activation problems and solutions. Our knowledgebase documents most problems that can arise with activation/deactivation. Check the list for solutions for most of them. Visit the knowledgebase.

How to find your serial number for registration

1. Open Nitro PDF Professional
2. On the Help ribbon, in the Product group, click About
3. On the License tab, copy your License code.

Versions of Nitro PDF Professional

Once installed, Nitro PDF Professional can be run in different modes, which depend on how long you have been using Nitro Pro for and whether you have purchased a license. The three modes are:

1. Free 14-day trial. By default, when you install Nitro PDF Professional it will run, fully-functionally and without any restrictions for 14 days completely free. After that time you must either purchase a license and activate the product, or use Nitro Pro in the Expired Trial mode.
2. Expired trial. Also known as ‘demo mode’, Nitro Pro will revert to this mode when the free 14-day trial mode has ended and a license has not been purchased. Nitro Pro will run indefinitely in this mode, however a ‘trial’ watermark will be placed on each page in any PDF you create or change.
3. Activated. Once you have purchased a license, and then entered and activated your license code, Nitro PDF Professional will work in fully-functional mode.
