A raster object is an image which is defined as a grid of colored squares. Raster objects tend to be large (in terms of file size), but are very good for reproducing images that include complex shading and/or large numbers of colors. Generally, the more colour information a raster object includes (black and white, greyscale or full color) and the higher its resolution (the number of colored squares, or samples, per inch on the PDF page), the greater its file size.
The chief drawback of raster objects is that they do not scale well; at high magnifications they become increasingly grainy. They are also relatively space-inefficient when it comes to reproducing simple illustrations consisting of simple shapes and small numbers of colors; images such as these are more appropriately reproduced using vector objects.
Nitro PDF Professional supports full raster object editing functionality - import, export, scaling and more.
