The PDF highlighter tool is actually an annotation tool used for adding feedback to an existing document. As such, while it behaves in the same way as a conventional highlighter pen, text highlighting added with the tool doesn't permanently affect the content of the original page, and can be hidden at will to reveal the original, unaltered page content.
It's also possible to add a text comment to PDF highlighting: this appears as a small note window connected to the section of highlighting. Other reviewers can even attach replies and further commentary to this text comment, and, as with all PDF commentary, both the highlighting itself and any text commentary can be organized and manipulated together with all other document commentary via the comments pane.
