It's often the case that fonts used in a given PDF document will not be available on every intended recipient's computer. In order to ensure that PDF text displays and prints accurately in these situations, many PDF files include partial or complete copies of the necessary font files as part of the PDF file itself. While this guarantees accurate reproduction, it also inevitably increases the overall size of the PDF file.
In situations where absolutely accurate reproduction of document appearance is not necessary or where the intended recipients are guaranteed to have a certain font installed, font information can be deliberately left out of a PDF file: the font is then said to be 'not embedded'. If the PDF is viewed on a computer that lacks the requisite font, the PDF viewer application will display the PDF text using a substitute font - so the text remains readable, although the appearance of the text necessarily changes.
Nitro PDF Professional offers you control over how fonts are included PDF documents, including the ability to exclude font data from PDFs, in both existing and newly-created PDF documents.
