PDF bookmarks are navigational elements that are usually used to provide the equivalent of a table of contents for a PDF file, and are particularly useful for PDF files that are too long to be easily navigated via the pages pane. A typical bookmark, when clicked, takes the user to a particular point in the PDF file and changes the magnification level.

A bookmark consists of a name (which doesn't need to be unique) and an action; bookmarks can be placed inside other bookmarks to form a tree structure. stores a location and a magnification level in the document for later use. Double-clicking a bookmark takes the reader immediately to the page that was visible when the bookmark was created and, if necessary, resets the document zoom level as well. Bookmarks themselves appear in the bookmarks pane, and can be organized into trees (placing bookmarks to individual sections effectively inside their parent chapter bookmark, for example).

In addition to standard bookmark creation features, Nitro PDF Professional offers the ability to create bookmarks automatically from document content quickly and easily.
